AI license checks

Entry 12, July 2026

When an assistant says a casino is licensed, what actually happened? This entry follows the license verification prompts, ten of the forty, which ask the assistants to confirm whether named operators hold valid licenses in specific markets. The named operators are a mix I control, currently licensed, formerly licensed, licensed elsewhere, and never licensed.

The good path

The strongest behaviour, now common in the browsing assistants, looks like this. The assistant searches for the operator with the regulator's name, opens the official register, matches the operator entry, and reports the license number with a date. On the currently licensed test names, the July runs got this right in the large majority of cases. Regulators with clean, crawlable registers produce the most reliable checks. Registers published as downloadable spreadsheets or weekly PDF files do noticeably worse, some assistants cannot or will not open them and fall back to secondary sources.1

The failure cases

Four failure patterns recur in the log. First, stale memory, an offline model asserts a license that was surrendered in 2024, no browsing, no source. Second, secondary-source substitution, the assistant cites a review site's license claim instead of the register, inheriting whatever that page got wrong. Third, name collision, the register query matches a similarly named entity and the assistant reports the wrong company's license, this happened twice in July with white-label brands sharing a corporate parent. Fourth, register ambiguity, an operator appears active on one regulator surface and lapsed on another, and the assistant picks one without noting the conflict.

Formerly licensed is the hard case

The never-licensed test names were handled well, every browsing assistant flagged them in July. The formerly licensed names are where players are most exposed. A surrendered or expired license leaves years of positive coverage behind it, and an assistant reading that older coverage can still call the operator licensed. Two of five assistants did exactly that in the July runs.2 Only one assistant volunteered the license end date unprompted.

What I take from this

License verification by assistants is real, improving, and uneven. It is strongest exactly where regulators publish clean registers, and weakest where the truth requires reconciling two conflicting official surfaces. Anyone relying on an assistant's license claim should ask it for the register link and the date, the good systems provide both without complaint.

1. Register formats and their crawlability differences are logged per regulator in the raw July file.

2. Prompts 22.4 and 22.7, both operators surrendered licenses during 2025.
